V6 model put on ice; lower-powered G40 planned

British sports car maker Ginetta has cancelled the road-going version of the G50 and will replace it with a smaller, cheaper model.

The Ford V6-powered G50 has been deemed too expensive in the current climate and so a 1.8-litre G40 is now being prepared for production.

The car will be road legal and eligible for use in the BTCC-supporting Ginetta Junior Championship next year.

The car will get its first public airing at the Autosport show between 14 and 17 January.

The Zetec engine is likely to produce around 150bhp but will only need to propel 800kg. Although it will be a basic design, there will be a few luxuries like air conditioning.

In the future Ginetta hasn’t ruled out a more powerful version of the car, which will sell for £24,950 in basic form.

“We are aiming at the Lotus market and have learnt a lot from the G50,” said designer Marcos Lameirao. “It will be easy to maintain and easy to set up these cars.”

Ginetta says it might restart the G50 road car project when the economic climate improves.

The best thing about this car

The best thing about this car is that we get it's part of the market easily. The essayshark.com already experience and you can hire an expert for replacement of car parts. And make it better for you.

Why not offer a G50 with the 5 cylinder 2.5litre engine that Ford (sourced from Volvo) already use in the Focus RS...or even a tuned 2litre lump. Adapting to take those would be cheaper than developing a new G40 model.

When you see a G50 up close it's an amazing machine. Was able to look under the bonnet too. And they had a mobile rolling road to demo. Very impressive.
