UK distributor of Canadian-built replica is ready to start sales

Allard Motor Works, the Canadian firm behind a modern recreation of Sydney Allard’s 1950s J2X two-seater sports car, is ready to start right-hand drive UK sales of its evocative, V8-powered J2X mkII.

The retro-styled roadster will be distributed in Europe exclusively through Phil Dunmore’s Premium Classic Cars of Iken, Suffolk. Standard UK specification and list pricing is still to be set, but the car is expected to start from around £100,000.

The new Allard is the creation of Canadian Roger Allard, who had no connection to the Sydney Allard’s family at all until designing and building his replica.

Conceived as a slightly larger modern recreation of the original J2X, however, the new version has been endorsed both by the British Allard family, and recognised by the Allard registry.

Powered by a General Motors 350bhp 5.7-litre V8 as standard, which feeds the rear wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox, the J2X mkII is a highly bespoke and handbuilt car that combines modern reliability, better practicality and better crash safety with the original Allard’s classic styling. Chrysler-powered 5.7- and 6.1-litre versions of the car are also offered.

Just a handful of J2X mkIIs have been built so far, one of them for American celebrity car enthusiast Jay Leno.

Autocar.co.uk will have an exclusive UK first drive of the new Allard later this month.
